The Sloth In You: A Creative Awakening

We live in a world that’s always in a hurry — faster internet, faster commutes, faster goals. It’s easy to lose sight of the simple power of just being. That’s where the sloth comes in: a quiet reminder to slow down and reconnect with what truly matters.

The Sloth in You was born during lockdown. Like so many others, I was struggling with isolation — cut off from the people and places that gave me energy. Caught in a work–sleep–repeat loop, I instinctively turned to creativity as a coping mechanism. One of those moments was writing a playful poem with a friend — a reflection of the emotional journey so many of us were on.

Atticus the sloth was naturally the perfect protagonist for such a poem — moving through the highs and lows of solitude and eventually rediscovering the importance of nature and self-connection. I didn’t realise it then, but that small act of creativity opened the door to something much bigger. What began as a personal outlet grew into a collaborative project that brought friends together, lifted spirits, and reminded me just how deeply we all need connection and nature to feel grounded.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, burnt out, or disconnected from yourself — this project is for you. What started as a poem has since become a book, a blog, and a growing community — all inspired by the idea of mindful living and slowing down in a fast world.

I’ve always been drawn to the outdoors — spending much of my childhood in the mountains and forests of Switzerland, or by the sea in Formentera and Istanbul. Those landscapes are stitched into my sense of peace. City life doesn’t always offer easy access to nature, but even the briefest moment outside shifts everything. It grounds me, heals me, and brings me back to myself.

So why the sloth? Well, these creatures embody the wisdom of slow living. Obvs. But it’s not about doing everything in slow motion, it’s about moving at a pace that feels right for you. I used to pressure myself to do things perfectly and quickly, and if I couldn’t, I would give up or move onto something else. I’m learning — slowly — that small, steady steps are so much better than none at all. This project took three years to come to life (maybe more — I’ve lost count!) but I am so proud that I persevered. It has been an incredible learning experience and a reminder that progress doesn’t have to be fast to be meaningful.

For me, The Sloth in You represents our inner voice — the kind, compassionate one that whispers:

You’re doing okay.
You’re doing your best.
I’m proud of you.

Life isn’t always easy. We all get thrown curveballs. What matters is learning to nurture ourselves, to celebrate even the tiniest steps forward, and to trust that we can always realign — gently — at our own pace.

If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this project, it’s this: listen to your inner sloth. Be kind to yourself. Express gratitude for the parts of you that you love. And carve out even ten minutes a day to connect — with nature, with someone who lights you up, or simply with yourself.

This is just the beginning. I’d love for you to join me as The Sloth in You grows — through this blog, the book, and our community. You can sign up to the newsletter to stay updated, or follow along on Instagram for gentle reminders to slow down. And if you know someone who could use a dose of sloth wisdom and serenity, please share the book with them — your support helps this slow, mindful movement continue to grow.

Thank you for reading my first blog — here’s to finding the sloth in you.
